Biography

Mark was born on October 17th 1966 in Darlington, County Durham. During his childhood he lived opposite of a Psychiatric Hospital for which his parents worked and it was quite normal to him to wave “hello” to the patients. When he was 5 years old he discovered his preference to horror films by watching "Brides of Dracula". One of Mark's first jobs was to open the mail for Rolf Harris on "Rolf's Cartoon Club" and sometimes he even forged Rolf's signature.

He met Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith at Bretton Hall College and later got introduced by a roommate to Jeremy Dyson. All four of them teamed up in 1995, calling themselves "The League of Gentlemen" in dependence on the 1959 film of the same name. At the age of 13 he wrote his first book called "The Hackenthorpe Book of Lies" and ever since was creative on writing books, including several Dr Who novels, a biography on the director of Frankenstein films James Whale and along with Jeremy Dyson "The Essex Files". As a huge Dr Who fan he also wrote the scripts to the 4 spin-off P.R.O.B.E.-films done by the low budget sci-fi company BBV. In contrast to other productions the writer has the rights to be on the set and delegate the shooting. Mark also starred along with his mate Reece in some of these productions. Fortunately Mark discovered his passion for comedy and is rather successful along with Jeremy, Reece and Steve on "The League of Gentlemen".

Mark is also keen on drawing and created the poster for the "League of Gentlemen Christmas Special" Mark is very anxious to pronounce his surename correctly: it's GAY-TISS not GATT-IS. If you like to know more about his work, please check it here.
